about

The notties assembled. There was much to discuss. Reaching out to Captain Fort through the song siphon they conversed wordlessly, more dance than speech really.

The notties’ seemingly perfect instrument was flawed. As the notties replayed Charlie’s memories like a phonograph, like a phonograph the memories were gradually changed, degraded, and destroyed. If the notties continued, each precious memory would fade into noise, and that noise would eventually fade into the silence they had know before Charlie’s arrival.

Charlie took some comfort in the fact that he was still aware enough to notice his deterioration. What had begun as flashbacks of the “my life flashed before my eyes” variety were now taking on a non-sensical quality. A machine that translates thoughts into fuzzy guitar solos, he thought. Improbable. And even now, his mind had returned to the vision of incorporeal captors. They were trying to communicate with him through some sort of interpretive dance. Charlie longed to tell them that he wanted to leave. That he had ventured too far, past the edge of the world, and he needed to return before they destroyed him. He longed to tell them all this, but all that came out of his mouth was a cello glissando.

The notties presented their terms: if Charlie used the song siphon to irrecoverably transfer all of his memories to the notties, in return, the notties would lead Fort out of Sargasso.

Charlie had always been an explorer at heart. Moved to color outside the lines, near the edge of the page and off the paper even. He had risked everything to make the long journey to Sargasso, a place beyond the edge of any star map. But now in Sargasso, he could see that the map he so longed to escape had traveled with him. It had always been within him. In his own mind. There was further to go. The pact was made.
