about

Upon entering Sargasso, Charlie was suddenly flooded with a memory of Ada. It was the night they first met. In their own way they both longed to reach the stars. As an astronaut, he literally wanted to travel to the outermost heavens. As a research scientist, Ada’s longing was far stranger. Her work combined astrophysics and epistemology, drawing inspiration from ancient cosmological models. Sargasso was a notion long since discarded, and ignored by scientists. But she hypothesized it was in some sense real, and a place that could be visited if only someone was willing to take the risk of the long solo journey. At this point in their conversation, Charlie had the urge to make a polite exit. But he couldn’t. There was no denying there was a spark. Whether of romance or scientific discovery he wasn’t sure - perhaps they were one and the same. They gazed into each other’s eyes. It was inevitable, they were partners.

As the memory drew to a close, Charlie had a brief vision of a vast audience witnessing this memory with him. He would have called them a captive audience but for the distinct, unsettling feeling that he was the one who was trapped. They seemed insatiably curious, terrifying.

lyrics

you took me out to lover's lane
we longed to reach the stars
and you told me your plans for everything
you were beautifully bizarre
that's when i should have walked away
but there was a spark
charlie you'll come back to me someday
that's what you'd say, but we're not the same in the dark

sing to me about gravity
i was falling and falling hard
that thing you call reality
you said it was only a little part
that's when i should have walked away
but there was a spark
charlie you'll come back to me someday
that's what you say, but we're not the same in the dark

charlie you'll come back to me someday
